Soca Run Nation launched a scholarship program featuring two unique opportunities for students within our communities. Having donated over $30,000 to local educational, health and wellness programs for children we stand committed to our mission. Beyond hosting interactive and engaging events to get the African American and Caribbean Community out active and healthy, we amplify entrepreneurship. All applicants must have participated in a Soca Run Festival Event. The two scholarships that we offer annually are outlined below. For more information, email SocaRunNation@gmail.com.

Troy D. Johnson Commitment to Change Scholarship

The Troy D. Johnson Commitment to Change Scholarship for children 18 and under is a powerful initiative designed to make a meaningful impact on the young lives of African American and Caribbean children in our community.

Purpose and Goals:

  1. Empowering Youth: This scholarship aims to empower young people by providing them with the financial resources needed to pursue their educational goals and personal development. It’s designed to support students who demonstrate a commitment to making positive changes in their lives or communities.

  2. Encouraging Excellence: By focusing on children 18 and under, the scholarship seeks to recognize and reward academic achievements, community involvement, fostering a culture of excellence and dedication among youth.

  3. Supporting Diverse Needs: The scholarship may cover a range of needs, from educational expenses like tuition and books to extracurricular activities or special health or wellness programs that contribute to the student’s overall development.

  4. Honoring Legacy: Named in honor of Troy D. Johnson the Founder of Soca Run Nation, the scholarship reflects his commitment to creating positive change and supporting the next generation. It serves as a tribute to his values and dedication to African American and Caribbean community development.

Eligibility and Application:

  • Academic Standing:

    • Enrollment Status: Applicants should be enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited institution of higher education (college, university, or vocational school).

    • GPA Requirement: A minimum GPA requirement may be set to ensure the applicant is maintaining strong academic performance.

  • Commitment to Community Service:

    • Evidence of Service: Applicants should demonstrate a history of active involvement in community service or social change initiatives. This can include volunteer work, advocacy, or other contributions aimed at improving their community.

  • Leadership Experience:

    • Leadership Roles: Experience in leadership positions, whether in school, community organizations, or extracurricular activities, is often required. This shows the applicant's ability to inspire and drive positive change.

  • Personal Statement or Essay:

    • Impact Focus: Applicants need to submit a personal statement or essay that outlines their commitment to creating positive change, their community involvement, and their future goals.

  • Letters of Recommendation:

    • References: Letters from individuals who can attest to the applicant’s character, leadership abilities, and commitment to community service are required.

  • Academic Level: Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in school and be able to provide a copy of transcripts.

  • Must have participated in a Soca Run Nation Event (Soca Run 5k, Soca Run M1le, etc.)

  • Must be 18 years or younger.

    Application Process:

    • Personal Statement or Essay: Applicants will be asked to write an essay or personal statement addressing their leadership experiences, community involvement, and future goals.

    • Letters of Recommendation: Letters from teachers, mentors, or community leaders who can speak to the applicant’s qualifications and character are required

    • Transcripts: Submission of academic transcripts to verify grades and overall academic performance is necessary.

    • Interview: Candidates will interview with Soca Run Nation Board of Directors.

The Nuri Yemaya Johnson Future Leader Scholarship, presented by Nuri Yemaya Johnson, daughter of the founder of Soca Run Nation, is a scholarship designed to support and encourage young leaders who are making significant contributions to their communities. The Nuri Yemaya Johnson Future Leader Scholarship reflects a commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders, celebrating cultural heritage, and fostering a spirit of community and excellence.

  1. Foster Leadership Development: The scholarship seeks to identify and nurture future leaders who will go on to make meaningful contributions in their fields and communities. It aims to provide these individuals with the resources and recognition needed to further their leadership development.
